Just about everybody has a favorite sport. Some people aren’t too particular and love a whole bunch of different games. Personally, I’ve never been as into sporting events as most people my age. Don’t get the wrong idea, I enjoy watching my home teams as much as the next guy. If I had to pick one sporting event to watch outside the Super Bowl or the World series, it would be the global event that the whole world watches every 4 years. That’s right, I’m talking about the Olympic games. I love to watch the Olympics. They offer something for everyone. Hopefully after reading this, you’ll understand why I’ve always enjoyed watching them.
How I see The Olympics
I always look forward seeing the Olympics on T.V. From the opening ceremony to the closing, there’s always something amazing to see during those games. Whether in the Summer or Winter, the Olympics always have something to offer to everyone from the viewers to the phenomenal athletes who compete. Watching the Olympics means the chance to witness what the human race are truly physically capable of. What I love most about the Olympics is that it’s something people all over the world enjoy. In my opinion, the sportsmanship and cooperation displayed among all nations during the Olympic games is a prime example of what the whole world is capable of if everyone stops all the conflicts and works together peacefully.
There’s Always Something for Everyone
I’ve always enjoyed about watching the Olympic games on T.V. Getting to watch sporting events that aren’t usually televised is amazing, and by pros no less. I always try to watch a bit of each event. Unfortunately, since there’s always several on different networks, it can be hard to keep up. Luckily, a few years ago I found out our T.V. had picture in picture features so we could keep track of at least 2 events and not worry about missing much. The physical feats performed by the athletes are always a sight to behold. The fact that the human body is capable of such feats always astounds me and I know they inspire others to be the next generation of Olympians. During the medal ceremonies, it’s great to see all the hard work has paid off for the athletes and their countries.
They Olympic Insignia
If you’ve watched the Olympics before, then you’re definitely familiar with the symbol of the games. No, I don’t mean the torch, I’m referring to the five colored rings on the games flag. At some point, you’ve probably wondered what those rings stand for. Well, I may know the answer to that question. Many years ago, as a kid, I remember seeing this cartoon that explained that each of the colored rings represents one of the main traits necessary to be a true Olympian at heart. I don’t know if that old cartoon from way back was accurate or not, but I like to think it is: the blue ring represents the perseverance that athletes need to drive them through the games and better themselves. The black ring represents the integrity required from the athletes, so they know to play fairly. The red ring is for sportsmanship, so even when someone loses, they know they did their best and are happy for their fellow Olympians. The yellow ring is for the excellency the athletes have displayed from the qualifiers and throughout the Olympic games. Finally, the green ring represents the bonds of brotherhood that all athletes should share with their fellow Olympians. I always think of those traits whenever I see the Olympic rings.
The Torch
Aside from the rings on the flag, the real symbol everyone loves about the games is the Olympic torch. Originally, I’m from Houston, Tx, and I saw the torch once with my own eyes. I don’t remember the exact year, but I do remember the details that lead to seeing the torch. It was sometime in the afternoon after I’d gotten home from school. Our housekeeper came into the house and said the torch runner was going to be running through a close by neighborhood soon. We got in the car and drove a way into town, and then we got out of the car to walk to a spot on a sidewalk where we’d be able to see the runner. There were a lot of people out on the sides of the road that day. After waiting for a bit, the runner finally came down the street carrying the torch. I’ll never forget that moment. The flame was burning on top of a tall, blue cylindrical torch. It may have been small, but it was a sight to behold, and it was on its way to light the Olympic games. I’ve never forgotten that moment, and I always enjoy seeing the torch on T.V. and all the creative ways its lit and extinguished at every different Olympic stadium.
The Summer Games
I aways look forward to the Olympic summer games, they always show amazing displays of what someone is truly capable of with enough practice. Seeing such feats performed by the athletes; I can’t help but imagine how much training went in to getting them to their physical peaks. The gymnastics are always a sight to behold, as gymnasts perform the true lengths of human agility and gracefulness. I particularly like the track and field, those athletes are the picture of human stamina, strength and endurance. A while back, I got into watching fencing on the Olympics. I still don’t know all its rules, but its fun to watch. One thing I like best about the Summer Olympics is sometimes they coincide with our summer family reunions. Back in 2008, the whole family got together for the reunion. Everyone had fun the first night and as a bonus, it was the same night the torch was lit for the games in Beijing. Everyone cheered during the lighting. Over the next few days, most of us watched the games together, most of all, the swimming races. The games of 2008 of course are when Micheal Phelps became known as the fastest man in the world, bringing home more gold than any other athlete in the games. That was a great year to witness Olympic history.
The Winter Games
After the Olympics end in the Summer, I’m usually a bit depressed about it. Thankfully, I know it’s only two short years until the Olympics return for the Winter games. The Winter games don’t have quite as much impact for me as the Summer, but they’re still a marvel to behold. I enjoy the Winter Olympics because they always bring a variety of events that just can’t be shown most of the year. My parents love the figure skating events and I must admit they are impressive. I can’t imagine how much strength, focus and endurance it takes to pull off such athletic feats smooth, slippery ice. The ski jumping events are something to see as well, always staying focused on the landing while in mid-air. From watching all the events, I don’t know if I’m more impressed by the athletic achievements, or all the camera angles they manage to get in. One of my favorite winter events are the luge and bobsled runs. I can only imagine how much focus it takes to go down such an icy narrow track at such high speeds. I think one reason I like it is because it reminds me of the move, “Cool Runnings.”
That’s why I love The Olympics
Yes, the Olympic games are truly the pinnacle of athletic sporting events. Every other year, I look forward to them regardless which season it is. Seeing so many countries compete together on equal grounds really gives me hope for lasting global peace. Getting to watch the games with my family helps bring us closer together in support for the U.S. Truly, the Olympics has something for everyone to enjoy, and we don’t have to wait too long to watch them. As of the time I’m writing this, the Summer Olympic Games of 2024 are just a few months away. Why not watch them yourself and see it from my perspective.
